I certainly had to look at the original to get a feel for what the piece was conveying. Pretty cool exercise though!
I've actually thought recently of doing something similar with taking a grid (similar to above) and transposing it over a photo and on a blank piece of paper, then painting in the squares on the paper abstractly, using only the color information in each individual square in the photo (maybe limiting to three or four colors).
